About Randy Thompson

Singer, Songwriter & Christian Recording Artist

Randy Thompson’s great passion was always to share Christ with others. In some 30 years of ministry, he did that for thousands of people across the United States, through personal appearances at churches, camps, retreats, and in concert settings. Through the many albums he recorded, his ministry extended around the globe.

As a musician, songwriter, and recording artist, Randy didn’t spend his time chasing a record contract or bigger and bigger venues. His concerts were typically solo, acoustic performances, at small to medium sized churches. There, his candor, his humor, his personal transparency and most of all his desire to make Christ the focus of his presentation ministered to so many.

His book A Believer’s Journey is an extension of that passion—written during the three years before Randy and his wife Linda received the devastating diagnosis of his Frontotemporal Dementia.

Though Randy no longer actively performs, his music stands as a testimony to his Savior — still touching the hearts of those with ears to hear.

A QUICK BIO OF RANDY THOMPSON…

Randy Thompson began playing guitar and writing songs as a young boy—eventually settling on the 12-string guitar as his signature instrument.

As a teenager, he accepted Jesus as his Savior and began carrying his Bible to school every day. He also began to write Christian songs and, in the 1970’s, began singing in Christian coffee houses throughout Phoenix, Arizona.

In 1978, he recorded his first album, entitled Jesus Touched Me—ten original songs of faith, released in cassette format.

He and his wife, Linda, were married in 1979 and they entered into full-time ministry in 1980. That same year, Randy graduated from Grand Canyon College with Bible & History degrees. Randy and Linda had their first child in 1982, eventually raising three children—Shawn, Miranda & Tyler, in Tempe, Arizona.

Randy Thompson Ministries was officially formed in 1990. Randy began actively marketing the ministry and doing concerts in churches around the country. He knew he was doing what God created him to do—sharing the love of Jesus in song and powerful teaching.

Over the years, Randy recorded seven more albums of original songs—all focused on the gospel of Jesus. Testimonials poured in, telling of how God used the songs in mighty ways.

One particular letter stood out. A young girl was walking along the Carefree Highway after her car had broken down. She saw a cassette lying on the side of the road with the tape hanging out. She picked up the cassette, took it home, and wound up the tape with a pencil (ask anyone from the ‘70s. They’ve all done it.)

She popped the tape into her portable cassette player and began to listen. She was so deeply moved by the songs that she spent months looking for more of Randy’s music. Eventually, a Christian Bookstore in Flagstaff showed her some of Randy’s cassettes. She immediately bought them—and eventually his CDs. She was so thrilled to have a way to contact Randy to tell her story, how God used his music to bring her back to God.

After many years in full-time ministry, Randy took on the position of senior pastor at his church—Open Door Fellowship, in Phoenix. He led the church well for some years, but in 2011 it became clear that Randy was struggling. He was not himself. No one knew then what was wrong, but the church had to let him go as pastor.

Finding himself suddenly without active ministry, Randy began writing the book “A Believer’s Journey,” which chronicles his time in full-time ministry. Because he’s a prophet, an evangelist and a truth teller, it is also a moving chronicle of his faith. He finished the book three years later—six months before he was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia in 2014. The book was finally published in 2024.

Randy is currently in a memory care facility. He is peaceful, calm and easy going. He is dearly loved by the staff and caregivers, who tell us that they love his music. While he is unable to do concerts, share Jesus, or write songs anymore, the lyrics in his songs and the words in his book will live on long after he departs to see Jesus face-to-face.
